The Sisters I Almost Never Met
A reluctant girl has no regrets about joining Kappa.
When you finish a triathlon, the sense of pride and personal triumph is overpowering. Early morning training sessions, the strict schedule and anxiety before race day require a lot of determination. Looking up to see my Kappa sisters at the finish line makes the accomplishment even more meaningful, especially when I think about how I almost never met them.Expand
Four years ago, I laughed when people asked me if I was going to join a sorority. I had a preconceived notion of Greek life based on stereotypes.
With encouragement from family members, I reluctantly signed up for Membership Recruitment. Almost instantly, my judgments were disproved. I met well-rounded, driven individuals … and they were Kappas. The decision to join is one I will never regret.
Looking back, I had no idea what joining a sorority really meant. I didn’t know that it would mean coming home to flowers, hugs and cards from my sisters to congratulate me after my races every Sunday. Or that it would mean unwavering support while juggling 12 to 16 hours of training per week in addition to school work. Without the encouragement of my sisters, I may not have found the success that I have with triathlons, including placing fifth overall in the U.S. at the USA Triathlon Collegiate Nationals.
I am so glad I decided to go Greek. From my loving, loyal sisters to the opportunities offered, Kappa has given me more than I could ever have imagined. Through Kappa, I have met the most incredible women, and for that I am truly thankful.
