Name: Naomi Ratner Chapter: Beta Tau, Syracuse Full-time occupation: Account Director at Relevent—Experiential Marketing & Events Volunteer position: Advisory Board Chairman and Chapter Council Adviser, Zeta Rho, Colgate How many total years have you volunteered with Kappa? Five years What talents made you a great match for this role? I served on Chapter Council when I was an undergraduate so I have a good understanding of all the offices and their roles and responsibilities. But even if I didn’t have that experience, that’s what the Kappa website is for! I think I’m also a good match for an advisory role because I’m able to manage my time well—as this volunteer work is in addition to a full-time job—and I am also able to connect with the chapter members on a personal level, which is important. What makes this role rewarding? Volunteering as an adviser is so rewarding because I’m able to give back and provide the support that was given to me when I was on Chapter Council. It’s amazing to see how much the women appreciate the support and guidance, and that really makes it all worth it. Advising is most rewarding when the chapter has successes—something as small as submitting an Event Planning Form on time or asking a good question about how the Nominating Committee functions, or something as big as being selected as Outstanding Chapter of the Year on campus, or having the chapter President selected as a Leadership Consultant with the Fraternity (which were two very proud moments for me as an adviser!). What or who is your most impactful Kappa memory or mentor? My Kappa mentor is Jeni Waldo, Purdue, an amazing and inspiring woman who served as Coordinator for Chapter Support for Syracuse, where I was an undergraduate. Our chapter had a lot of challenges, and Jeni was my support system through it all when I served as chapter President during a very difficult time. She guided me through challenging situations and taught me the importance of staying calm under stress, which is now a strategy I use every day at work. One of my most impactful Kappa memories is being at General Convention and seeing so many Kappas—from all places and of all ages—is really amazing. Being together is a reminder of the link that ties together generations of Kappa sisters as we strive to do our little perfectly. What can someone expect by taking on this role? By taking on this role, a Kappa alumna can expect a really rewarding, fulfilling leadership experience that’s also a special reminder of how amazing the collegiate years are. It’s also a great opportunity to meet and network with Kappa alumnae, and proves that membership in Kappa really is for a lifetime.
